Querido hermano Francisco:
Desde que fuiste elegido para ser la humilde “Roca” sobre la que Jesús quiere seguir construyendo hoy su Iglesia, he seguido con atención tus palabras. Ahora, acabo de llegar de Roma, donde te he podido ver abrazando a los niños, bendiciendo a enfermos y desvalidos y saludando a la muchedumbre.

Dicen que eres cercano, sencillo, humilde, simpático… y no sé cuántas cosas más. Pienso que hay en ti algo más, mucho más. Pude ver la Plaza de San Pedro y la Via della Conciliazione llena de gentes entusiasmadas. No creo que esa muchedumbre se sienta atraída solo por tu sencillez y simpatía. En pocos meses te has convertido en una “buena noticia” para la Iglesia e, incluso, más allá de la Iglesia. ¿Por qué?
Casi sin darnos cuenta, estás introduciendo en el mundo la Buena Noticia de Jesús. Estás creando en la Iglesia un clima nuevo, más evangélico y más humano. Nos estás aportando el Espíritu de Cristo. Personas alejadas de la fe cristiana me dicen que les ayudas a confiar más en la vida y en la bondad del ser humano.

Algunos que viven sin caminos hacia Dios me confiesan que se ha despertado en su interior una pequeña luz que les invita a revisar su actitud ante el Misterio último de la existencia.

Yo sé que en la Iglesia necesitamos reformas muy profundas para corregir desviaciones alimentadas durante muchos siglos, pero estos últimos años ha ido creciendo en mí una convicción. Para que esas reformas se puedan llevar a cabo, necesitamos previamente una conversión a un nivel más profundo y radical. Necesitamos, sencillamente, volver a Jesús, enraizar nuestro cristianismo con más verdad y más fidelidad en su persona, su mensaje y su proyecto del Reino de Dios. Por eso, quiero expresarte qué es lo que más me atrae de tu servicio como Obispo de Roma en estos inicios de tu tarea.

Yo te agradezco que abraces a los niños y los estreches contra tu pecho. Nos estás ayudando a recuperar aquel gesto profético de Jesús, tan olvidado en la Iglesia, pero tan importante para entender lo que esperaba de sus seguidores. Según el relato evangélico, Jesús llamó a los Doce, puso a un niño en medio de ellos, lo estrechó entre sus brazos y les dijo: “El que acoge a un niño como este en mi nombre, me está acogiendo a mí”.

Se nos había olvidado que en el centro de la Iglesia, atrayendo la atención de todos, han de estar siempre los pequeños, los más frágiles y vulnerables. Es importante que estés entre nosotros como “Roca” sobre la que Jesús construye su Iglesia, pero es tan importante o más que estés en medio de nosotros abrazando a los pequeños y bendiciendo a los enfermos y desvalidos, para recordarnos cómo acoger a Jesús. Este gesto profético me parece decisivo en estos momentos en que el mundo corre el riesgo de deshumanizarse desentendiéndose de los últimos.

Yo te agradezco que nos llames de forma tan reiterada a salir de la Iglesia para entrar en la vida donde la gente sufre y goza, lucha y trabaja: ese mundo donde Dios quiere construir una convivencia más humana, justa y solidaria. Creo que la herejía más grave y sutil que ha penetrado en el cristianismo es haber hecho de la Iglesia el centro de todo, desplazando del horizonte el proyecto del Reino de Dios.
Juan Pablo II nos recordó que la Iglesia no es el fin de sí misma, sino solamente “germen, signo e instrumento del Reino de Dios”, pero sus palabras se perdieron entre otros muchos discursos. Ahora se despierta en mí una alegría grande cuando nos llamas a salir de la “autorreferencialidad” para caminar hacia las “periferias existenciales”, donde nos encontramos con los pobres, las víctimas, los enfermos, los desgraciados…

La herejía más grave y sutil
que ha penetrado en el cristianismo
es haber hecho de la Iglesia el centro de todo,
desplazando del horizonte el proyecto del Reino de Dios.

Disfruto subrayando tus palabras: “Hemos de construir puentes, no muros para defender la fe”; necesitamos “una Iglesia de puertas abiertas, no de controladores de la fe”; “la Iglesia no crece con el proselitismo, sino por la atracción, el testimonio y la predicación”. Me parece escuchar la voz de Jesús que, desde el Vaticano, nos urge: “Id y anunciar que el Reino de Dios está cerca”, “id y curad a los enfermos”, “lo que habéis recibido gratis, dadlo gratis”.

Te agradezco también tus llamadas constantes a convertirnos al Evangelio. Qué bien conoces a la Iglesia. Me sorprende tu libertad para poner nombre a nuestros pecados. No lo haces con lenguaje de moralista, sino con fuerza evangélica: las envidias, el afán de hacer carrera y el deseo de dinero; “la desinformación, la difamación y la calumnia”; la arrogancia y la hipocresía clerical; la “mundanidad espiritual” y la “burguesía del espíritu”; los “cristianos de salón”, los “creyentes de museo”, los cristianos con “cara de funeral”. Te preocupa mucho “una sal sin sabor”, “una sal que no sabe a nada”, y nos llamas a ser discípulos que aprenden a vivir con el estilo de Jesús.

No nos llamas solo a una conversión individual. Nos urges a una renovación eclesial, estructural. No estamos acostumbrados a escuchar ese lenguaje. Sordos a la llamada renovadora del Vaticano II, se nos ha olvidado que Jesús invitaba a sus seguidores a “poner el vino nuevo en odres nuevos”. Por eso, me llena de esperanza tu homilía de la fiesta de Pentecostés: “La novedad nos da siempre un poco de miedo, porque nos sentimos más seguros si tenemos todo bajo control, si somos nosotros los que construimos, programamos y planificamos nuestra vida, según nuestros esquemas, seguridades y gustos… Tenemos miedo a que Dios nos lleve por caminos nuevos, nos saque de nuestros horizontes, con frecuencia limitados, cerrados, egoístas, para abrirnos a los suyos”.

Por eso nos pides que nos preguntemos sinceramente: “¿Estamos abiertos a las sorpresas de Dios o nos encerramos con miedo a la novedad del Espíritu Santo? ¿Estamos decididos a recorrer los caminos nuevos que la novedad de Dios nos presenta o nos atrincheramos en estructuras caducas, que han perdido la capacidad de respuesta?”. Tu mensaje y tu espíritu están anunciando un futuro nuevo para la Iglesia.

Quiero acabar estas líneas expresándote humildemente un deseo. Tal vez no podrás hacer grandes reformas, pero puedes impulsar la renovación evangélica en toda la Iglesia. Seguramente, puedes tomar las medidas oportunas para que los futuros obispos de las diócesis del mundo entero tengan un perfil y un estilo pastoral capaz de promover esa conversión a Jesús que tú tratas de alentar desde Roma.
