Monseñor Proaño fue hijo de una familia pobre. Nació en San Antonio de Ibarra un 29 de enero de 1910. Su vida transcurrió como la de todos los niños y niñas pobres de una pequeña parroquia rural. Estudió en la escuela fiscal de su pueblo y, desde su hogar, asimiló los grandes valores humanos y espirituales que le fueron inculcados por sus padres desde su más tierna infancia y con los cuales fue coherente hasta su muerte.

Entre esos valores que monseñor Proaño resaltó en su libro “Creo en el Hombre y en la Comunidad” se destacan: la pobreza, el trabajo, el amor a la persona pobre, la honradez, la libertad, la valentía.

Como todo buen sanantonense tuvo desde pequeño inclinación por el arte y en la edad de las grandes decisiones juveniles vivió el dilema de su vocación. Él sostenía: “mi sueño era ser pintor”, pero optó por el sacerdocio y, cuando fue ordenado en 1936, su máxima aspiración fue ser “párroco de indios”. Así se perfilaba toda una vida consagrada a la entrega incondicional por la liberación de las personas oprimidas.

En 1954, al ser consagrado obispo, se desplazó a Riobamba, donde vivió la mayor experiencia de entrega que el ser humano haya vivido como obispo en nuestra tierra y vio que era hora de cumplir su sueño juvenil, de ser no solo “párroco de indios”, sino pastorear una grey en la cual más del 70% lo eran.

Al escribir el “Credo que dio sentido a su vida”, monseñor Proaño sostenía “con esa mirada retrospectiva que debo tener para escribir estas páginas, comprendo que de allí parten mi opción por los pobres, mi estimación a los trabajadores, mi postura inflexible en relación con la verdad y con la justicia, una permanente apertura unida a un inconformismo en relación con la conquista de la libertad, la capacidad de compromiso arriesgado al servicio del bien de los demás y en la proclamación de los valores trascendentales del hombre. Los años de mi infancia fueron una lejana preparación para la misión y tareas que Dios me destinaba”.

Ya en Riobamba, desde su inicio su vida fue controvertida. Fue recibido con el lujo que ofrecen a los obispos las clases dominantes. Pero un hecho sencillo desapercibido marcó su entrada en esa problemática diócesis: el saludo de un indígena anónimo, descalzo y pobre, con un poncho viejo y raído, que al borde de la carretera se acercó hasta el vehículo que lo conducía a la ciudad y le dijo “Por fin llegaste, Taita Amito”.

Pronto se desvinculó de los lazos que le tendía el poder tanto político como social y, fiel al método ver, juzgar y actuar, se adentró en los páramos y cerros de esa amplia geografía de su diócesis, para ver y sufrir la realidad de sus vidas. Constató la crueldad con la que los terratenientes trataban a la población indígena, a quien incluso vendía como parte de las haciendas y en cuyo interior mantenían espacios y elementos de tortura. Palpó el despojo de tierra y territorio operado desde la conquista y mantenido por el poder colonial y eclesial. Verificó cuánta tierra poseía la Diócesis como fruto de esa expoliación y de ese injusto reparto. Así, una de sus primeras y principales acciones proféticas fue el devolver las 36.000 hectáreas de tierra “de la diócesis” a los y las indígenas, como acto de reparacipon de esa injusticia de siglos. Paralelamente, le exigían que construyera la catedral de Riobamba, caída en un anterior terremoto, pero él se negó a edificarla, pues sostenía que “un indio vale más que una catedral”.

Desde el inicio hizo la opción preferencial por la población indígena, considerada por él como la más pobre entre los pobres y portadora –en su cultura- de las semillas del verbo, con capacidad de transformar el mundo actual. Con ellos y ellas realizó la más grande obra de redención que se haya operado en el Ecuador republicano.

La vida de Taita Proaño en Riobamba estuvo marcada por la presencia de innumerables conflictos, incomprensiones acusaciones y persecuciones. Le decían el obispo rojo, comunista y subversivo por el hecho de reclamar justicia, libertad, tierra y territorios para los pueblos indios…

Al igual que nuestro amado maestro Jesús de Nazareth, la gigantesca obra de Taita Proaño responde a la descripción de Lucas cuando expresa: “El Espíritu del Señor está sobre mí, Él me ha ungido para llevar buenas nuevas a los pobres, para anunciar la libertad a los cautivos y a los ciegos que pronto van a ver, para despedir libres a los oprimidos y proclamar el año de gracia del Señor”.

Monseñor Proaño realizó su obra profético-redentora en las dimensiones la fe y la política. Entre las más notables aportaciones podemos citar, por un lado, la transformación de la Iglesia piramidal en una Iglesia viva, comunitaria, pueblo de Dios; el sueño de la Iglesia indígena, auténtica y autóctona, de la teología y liturgia indias; y la vitalidad de la teología de la liberación. Por otro lado, fue motivador y promotor de las organizaciones indigena y popular, instancias –según él- únicas para alcanzar la liberación integral de los pueblos, para defender y garantizar la vigencia de los derechos humanos y de los derechos como pueblos y nacionalidades. Su mayor logro: la recuperación de la dignidad de las nacionalidades indígenas.

Fue padre conciliar. Tuvo actuaciones decisivas en las conferencias espiscopales latinoamericanas de Medellín y Puebla. Como fundador y director del Instituto Pastoral Latinoamericano contribuyó en la formación de obispos, sacerdotes, teólogos y laicos comprometidos con las transformaciones sociales y eclesiales de entonces.

Monseñor Proaño ya como maestro, comunicador, escritor, pintor, poeta, eclesiólogo, pastor, internacionalista, defensor de los derechos humanos, amigo y profeta, a 25 años de su resurrección, nos sigue evangelizando.
