Cardenal Arns, en la senda de la teología de la liberación

Fue testigo privilegiado y protagonista de la vida religiosa y política de Brasil durante toda la segunda mitad del siglo XX


El cardenal franciscano brasileño Paulo Evaristo Arns AP

El 14 de diciembre falleció, colmado de años -95- y de virtudes –la más importante, la opción por las mayorías empobrecidas- el cardenal franciscano brasileño Dom Paulo Evaristo Arns, obispo auxiliar y arzobispo de Sâo Paulo durante más de treinta años (1966-1998), que brilló con luz propia en los diferentes campos del saber y de la vida religiosa y política de su país y de América Latina. Primero como profesor, maestro y teólogo, luego como obispo de la liberación y profeta. Formado intelectualmente en la Sorbona de París en lengua, literatura y filosofía clásicas, fue profesor de dichas disciplinas e infundió en el alumnado el espíritu humanista, el amor y el gusto por la cultura clásica. Enseñó literatura patrística a los estudiantes de teología, a quienes fomentó el estudio de las obras de los Padres de la Iglesia, algunas de cuales tradujo. Cuenta Leonardo Boff que la última vez que lo visitó en el convento de religiosas donde residió en las afueras de Sâo Paulo lo encontró leyendo los sermones de Juan Crisóstomo en griego. Pero, sobre todo, enseñó a pensar crítica y creativamente. Fue además un excelente escritor con una amplia bibliografía.

Obispo y profeta

 

El cardenal Arns fue obispo y profeta, dimensiones difíciles de compaginar en una misma persona. El obispo suele ejercer el poder eclesiástico al servicio de la institución religiosa que lo ha elegido y en alianza con el poder político. El profeta, por el contrario, es un visionario que muestra al jerarca la desnudez que se esconde tras sus ornamentos sagrados, la vacuidad de las pompas y vanidades sobre las que se asienta artificialmente, la falta de coherencia entre lo que predica y lo que vive, la bisutería en la que está envuelta su supuesta misión trascendente y, en fin, la falta de autoridad moral cuando se aleja de la ética de las Bienaventuranzas.

Fue su talante profético lo que llevó al cardenal Arns a desposeerse de los atributos episcopales autoritarios y alejarse de los conciliábulos eclesiásticos y políticos para ubicarse en el mundo de la exclusión y en el lugar de las mayorías populares marginadas de la muy poblada urbe de Sâo Paulo y hacer suyos sus sufrimientos y esperanzas. Y a fe que lo consiguió, sin por ello renunciar a su actividad como obispo, pero no como vigilante de la ortodoxia, sino como impulsor de la reforma conciliar y de experiencias eclesiales comunitarias. Su talante profético se alimentaba del espíritu franciscano al que nunca renunció como pudiera esperarse que hiciera cuando logró llegar a la cúpula de Iglesia católica brasileña. Francisco de Asís fue siempre su guía evangélica.

El cardenal Arns fue testigo privilegiado y protagonista de la vida religiosa y política de Brasil durante toda la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Vivió y sufrió en carne propia y en primera línea los horrores y la barbarie de la larga dictadura militar de su país. En sus sermones, escritos y declaraciones públicas denunció proféticamente los crímenes, las torturas y las sistemáticas transgresiones de los derechos humanos por los militares y defendió la democracia. Especial empeño puso en la condena de la tortura a la que eran sometidos los activistas de los derechos humanos.

Es de destacar el apoyo prestado a los dominicos presos y torturados, entre ellos Frei Betto, prestigioso escritor y teólogo de la liberación, frente a la actitud cómplice de algunos de los superiores dominicos. Denunció la represión contra la clase trabajadora y apoyó sus luchas y reivindicaciones. La confrontación directa con la dictadura le acarreó controles policiales y persecución política, que no le hicieron bajar el tono de sus críticas. En su lucha contra la dictadura, defensa los derechos humanos y opción por los pobres siguió el ejemplo del profético arzobispo brasileño Helder Cámara de quien se consideraba discípulo.

Comunidades cristianas de base

La II Conferencia del Episcopado Latinoamericano celebrada en Medellín (Colombia) en 1968 fijó como prioridad para la Iglesia del continente la creación de comunidades cristianas de base, que definió como “el primero y fundamental núcleo eclesial” y “factor de promoción humana y desarrollo”. El cardenal Arns, fiel a la eclesiología comunitaria de Medellín, impulsó y animó la creación de dichas comunidades. Gracias a su iniciativa y a la de otros obispos, en Brasil llegó a haber cerca de 80.000 comunidades eclesiales de base ubicadas preferentemente en zonas rurales y en los suburbios de las grandes ciudades. Este fenómeno dio lugar a lo que Leonardo Boff llamó “eclesiogénesis: las comunidades de base reinventan la Iglesia”.

Arns destacó por defender la teología de la liberación y a sus principales cultivadores, muchos de ellos teólogas y teólogos brasileños perseguidos por el Vaticano. La hizo realidad en su actividad pastoral siguiendo su metodología: análisis crítico de la realidad, interpretación liberadora de la Biblia y orientación a la praxis, y conforme al principio de la opción radical por los colectivos empobrecidos. Apoyó a las teólogas y los teólogos de la liberación en momentos de persecución, tribulación y condena. Leonardo Boff contó con la compañía y la solidaridad de sus hermanos franciscanos los cardenales Arns y Lorscheider durante el proceso al que fue sometido por el cardenal Raztinger siendo presidente del ex Santo Oficio, quien le sancionó con la imposición de un tiempo de silencio.

Según confesión del propio Boff, durante el proceso, Arns, refriéndose al documento de la Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe (CDF) Instrucción sobre algunos aspectos de la teología de la liberación, que condenaba esta corriente teológica sin matices, le acusó a Ratzinger en estos términos: “Usted ha asumido la visión de los enemigos de esta teología [de la liberación], que son los militares latinoamericanos y los grupos conservadores del episcopado… Espero de usted un nuevo documento, positivo ahora, que reconozca esta forma de hacer teología a partir del sufrimiento de los pobres y en función de su liberación”. Ratzinger tuvo en cuenta la petición de Arns y en 1986 la CDF publicó la Instrucción en positivo Libertatis conscientia. Sobre libertad y liberación. Este testimonio es una muestra más de que el cardenal-arzobispo de Sâo Paulo no se doblegó ante ningún poder, tampoco ante el eclesiástico.
