MONSEÑOR OSCAR ROMERO.   Un paso de Dios en la historia.-

El 24 de marzo de 1980 fue asesinado el arzobispo de San Salvador, Monseñor Oscar Arnulfo Romero, hoy asumido como beato de la Iglesia Católica.

Al ser nombrado arzobispo, la oligarquía salvadoreña pretendió acercarlo a sus intereses y le ofreció un palacio episcopal con las comodidades propias de los dueños del poder.  Pero Romero lo rechazó y se fue a vivir a una modesta habitación junto al hospital de la Divina  Providencia, lugar en el que recibía a todas las personas que le requerían.  Allí preparaba sus homilías dominicales a través de las cuales orientaba a su pueblo en medio del conflicto armado.  Y allí oraba a Dios, que ve en lo escondido, convencido de que “Dios va con nuestra historia.  Dios no nos ha abandonado”.  (Homilía del 9-12-1979).  Y con esa profunda fe buscó la paz para los pobres y las víctimas de la represión.

Romero anunció al Dios de la esperanza de justicia; de las organizaciones populares; de los sacerdotes perseguidos y asesinados.  Sus homilías iban recogiendo las voces de los mártires, tal como él mismo lo atestiguó en la víspera de su asesinato: “Le pido al Señor, durante toda la semana mientras  voy recogiendo el clamor del pueblo y el dolor de tanto crimen, la ignominia de tanta violencia, que me dé la palabra oportuna para consolar, para denunciar, para llamar al arrepentimiento”.  (23-3-1980).

Su palabra profética mantiene plena vigencia para su país como también para el Chile de hoy: “Yo denuncio, sobre todo, la absolutización de la riqueza.  Este es el gran mal de El Salvador: la riqueza, la propiedad privada como un absoluto intocable.  ¡Y ay del que toque ese alambre de alta tensión!  Se quema”.  Para agregar que “vivimos en un falso orden, basado en la represión y el miedo”.  Lo anterior sucede “porque se juega con los pueblos, se juega con las votaciones, se juega con la dignidad de los hombres”.

Para continuar afirmando: “Estamos en un mundo de mentiras donde nadie cree ya en nada”.

Simultáneamente, es válido recordar que Romero también señaló que “hay que comenzar por casa”.  En consecuencia, “todo el que denuncia debe estar dispuesto a ser denunciado y, si la Iglesia denuncia las injusticias, está dispuesta también a escuchar que se la denuncie y está obligada a convertirse… Los pobres son el grito constante que denuncia no sólo de la injusticia social, sino también de la poca generosidad de nuestra propia Iglesia”.  (17-2-1980).

Monseñor Romero tomó en serio las palabras de Puebla: a los pobres Dios “los ama y los defiende”.  Y por ello implementó una pastoral a favor de la justicia, la esperanza y la vida de los más débiles.  Y esto mismo le significó enfrentarse con los opresores y los represores.  El ahora beato Romero nunca se cansó de repetir: “Dios va con nuestra historia.  Dios no nos ha abandonado.  Ningún cristiano debe sentirse solo en su caminar, ninguna familia tiene que sentirse desamparada, ningún pueblo puede ser pesimista, aún en medio de las crisis que parecen más insolubles”… Puesto que la fe en Cristo otorga la posibilidad de creer que “sobre estas ruinas brillará la gloria del Señor”.

¿Qué haría Romero hoy, cuando el mundo sufre el agravamiento de una profunda crisis, mientras los agentes del capitalismo salvaje (bancos, transnacionales, conglomerados mediáticos, instituciones internacionales y gobiernos neoliberales) buscan potenciar sus beneficios a través del intervencionismo y el neocolonialismo?.  Guerras, ocupaciones militares, tratados de libre comercio gestados en secreto, “medidas de austeridad” expresadas en privatización de bienes comunes y servicios públicos, rebaja de salarios, reducción de derechos, aumento del desempleo, destrucción de la naturaleza, etc…, etc…, etc…  Estas políticas aumentan las migraciones, los desplazamientos forzados, los desalojos, el endeudamiento y las desigualdades sociales,  y que tienen como corolario la intensificación de la represión a los pueblos que exigen sus derechos, el asesinato de líderes de los movimientos populares  y la criminalización de las luchas sociales.

Estas políticas neoliberales han provocado, particularmente en nuestro país,  la mercantilización del sentido de la vida, deshumanizando a las personas y sus relaciones, vaciándolas de valores éticos y remitiéndolas a lo que significan monetariamente. No es esto un infortunio, sino una injusticia, porque es una situación contraria a la voluntad de Dios, ya que atenta contra la dignidad de los seres humanos que, según el Evangelio, son hijos de Dios.

Monseñor Romero conoció el mundo bajo el prisma del Evangelio y desde allí observó la escandalosa contradicción de la mayoría de la población de América Latina y El Caribe, y la condición de mayoría católica de sus habitantes.  Romero comprendió que la pobreza no obedece a leyes naturales, sino que es producto de la injusticia, por lo que se hace necesario arrancar sus causas, tal como lo señalara la Conferencia Episcopal de Medellín, al calificar a la pobreza como “un mal”.

Es así explicable la resistencia y asesinato de Monseñor Romero de parte de los sectores privilegiados de su país, de Estados Unidos, de América Latina y de los fariseos enquistados en las cúpulas del catolicismo.  Romero es un caso conocido.  Lamentablemente, han sido y continúan siendo centenares de miles de auténticos discípulos de Jesús que han sufrido un destino semejante al suyo.

Dice el Evangelio que Jesús “pasó haciendo el bien”.  Al igual que Jesús, Romero pasó por esta vida “curando a los oprimidos”.  Es esto lo que permite comprender que con la muerte de Romero no murió su palabra.

Días después del asesinato de Romero, Ignacio Ellacuría dijo: “con Romero, Dios pasó por El Salvador”.

En Chile: ¿podremos afirmar lo mismo de los obispos, de los sacerdotes y de los católicos de hoy?
